With the state of today’s economy, many people are finding themselves in a position of having to figure out more money than they used to. Usually, the solution is to get another job on the side to make enough to get by. However, the job market also isn’t in the best of shape, and this also isn’t an option for many people due to time constraints and familial responsibilities. This leaves only one option, which is to save money by cutting back.
There are lots of different ways to cut back and save a little cash, but unfortunately, most people think that they will end up having to give up all non-essential luxuries in order to save sufficient money. Now, depending on your financial situation, this may or may not be true, but it’s worth noting that there are plenty of ways to save money that don’t really require giving up much of anything. And that’s what the topic of this article is.
We’re going to be taking a look at some creative and effective ways to save money around the house that don’t involve having to give up everything that you have come to enjoy. So without any further ado, here are some of the best methods to accomplish this.
We’ll start with cellular service. The first thing you can do is visit your provider’s website and see if they have any plans that fit your needs but are more economical. If they don’t you can always go and check out a competitor. Many companies will give you a good rate for switching over. You can of course always call the company and try to negotiate for a better rate. You’d be surprised how often this actually works.
Same goes for services like cable TV and internet. With cable, really ask yourself how much you actually watch TV, and whether or not you can still watch your favorite shows on streaming sites like Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime. Sometimes, you can skip the cable and just get the internet and a subscription to these services is cheaper than cable but gives you all you need. Again, you can also try negotiating for a better rate and switching companies can sometimes yield a deal.
Next, we’ll move onto groceries. This one takes a bit of planning, but can totally be worth the effort. Buying things in bulk is a great way to save money. Don’t go crazy and buy everything in large amounts, try to stick to things that will not spoil quickly (like cheese and meat, both of which can be frozen). So you’ll buy little, perishable items once a week, but the more expensive items can be purchased in bulk once a month at a discount.
Now, another way to save money each month is to learn the best tips on how to reduce power bill. Electricity is one of the more expensive monthly bills and you can actually take control of this by applying certain tips to keep your usage down. While we’re not going to get into all the different way to save on electricity (they are well covered elsewhere) I’ll just add that it is completely possible to reduce your bill by 20% or so if you dedicatedly apply yourself to this.
Finally, there is the matter of buying everything else. I’m talking about clothes, electronics, furniture, you name it. These types of items can usually be found online for a much lower rate than in a brick and mortar store. You can also consider buying things used like furniture and ever electronics. Sites like eBay and Craigslist are great for finding bargains and deals. You can find almost anything you need at a lower price by searching online. Same goes for clothes. While this may be tricky as you can’t try them on, if you subscribe to clothing retailer’s mailing lists, they will usually give to info on upcoming sales through e-mail. Then you can go to the store and physically shop for the clothes while still getting a discount.
If you do the above, you’ll surely be able to make a dent in your monthly expenses. And the best part is that you’ll still have the same type of lifestyle you had before, but at a reduced rate.
